Hi, I’m Alex, founder and operator of SKYMO Radio Gear Company. 

Let me tell you a little bit about this business... 

 

A few years back, I wanted to install a radio in my truck again. It had been nearly a decade since I'd had one and I was ready to get started.

But I ran into a problem that many mobile radio users know all too well: high-quality mounts that placed the radio in a convenient spot and didn’t require drilling were nearly impossible to find. As it happened, I had recently acquired my first 3D printer and I felt like it gave me the power to create anything I could imagine.

So I set out to make what I couldn't find elsewhere.

Before long I was driving around in my Silverado with my newly created radio mount – and pretty thrilled that I was able to build a clean, no-drill solution. That early design would eventually become the first SKYMO radio mount, part number 20102A!

What began as a project to solve this problem for myself grew into SKYMO Radio Gear Company as more and more people saw the design and reached out about solutions for their own vehicles.

So I went to work designing and building radio mounts for the vehicles I was asked about. Everything was run out of a tiny basement apartment in Fort Collins, CO. A single, small Prusa Mini printer that sat on top of my roll top desk was responsible for all of the prototyping and production. It was slow and inefficient but it got the job done!

Over the past few years the catalog of SKYMO radio mounts, and our operation alike, has grown slowly but steadily as I work to satisfy the ever-growing number of requests for radio mounts for different vehicles.

Our small but mighty fleet of much improved printers is working around the clock to make sure radio mounts are ready for purchase when you need them.

There's been a lot of updates along the way to add new features, improve usability, and make the mounts as versatile as possible.

Through it all, the goal has stayed the same: to make things easier for you. Whether you're finding the information you need on the website, choosing the right mount, installing it, or reaching out for support, my hope is that your experience with SKYMO makes your life a little easier.

It's been quite the journey and I am so grateful to the community for supporting SKYMO from the start.

Location

SKYMO Radio Gear Company is based in Golden, CO. Our plastic parts are all 3D printed in Golden. Steel parts are sourced from vendors in various parts of the country. All parts are shipped directly to you from Colorado.

 

About the Printing Process

It is true that 3D printing is not the most time-efficient method of manufacture out there, but it carries with it a number of distinct advantages that allow us to serve customers better, including:

• Designs can be modified and improved at any time.
• It is possible to make small batches of a particular product, a one-off run of a custom product, or create made-to-order items.
• Since there are no huge expenditures associated with setting up production of a single design (in contrast to molds for injection molding, for example), ideas can be pursued even if the customer-base for a particular idea is relatively small.
• 3D printing makes rapid prototyping easier, giving us the ability to fine-tune products to their specific use.

Not everything, but most items found in the store are printed. Each printed part goes through its own journey on the printer and in post-processing. As such, you may see artifacts from the printing process if you inspect your part closely. See if you can spot the layer lines! 3D printing is an incredible process and it’s worth looking the part over and marveling at what it can do.

Where We're Headed

My primary goal is to continue to develop products that meet unique customer needs and to continue to deliver products that perfectly solve the problems they are intended to solve.

It takes time to design, prototype and sufficiently test the products before listing them so our product catalog is still relatively small. It will continue to grow as ideas become finished products.
